Part of the problem with really understanding history is understanding that no one who was alive when “history” was being made had any idea how “history” was going to turn out. No one knew that the Battle of the Somme was going to be the “Battle of the Somme,” for example, nor did anyone in attendance at Lincoln’s address in Gettysburg have any idea they were listening to “The Gettysburg Address.”
